If you or a family member is currently taking prescription drugs on a regular basis you are aware of the cost, especially if they are name brands or non formulary. There is a very helpful website and smartphone app to assist with finding the lowest cost. Go to www.goodrx.com or good rx in your app store.  You enter your zip code and the name of the medication.  The site will show you the costs at a variety of pharmacies in your area.  It will also show generic alternatives if available and also coupons to print out to possibly save you additional dollars. Of course, you can also call or go online to your insurance company’s pharmacy plan and research there as well.

When purchasing prescription drugs, always ask the pharmacy to run a “cash price” and the cost through your insurance. If the cost is cheaper by paying cash, you can save money. If your prescription costs go towards your deductible and you pay cash be sure to hold your receipts until the end of the year. If you end up meeting your deductible you can then file those “cash price” purchases for reimbursement through your insurance. If you do not meet your deductible then you’ve enjoyed the savings!

Be sure to have any and all websites and apps installed and saved on your phone when you are out. Be familiar with them and know how to use them ahead of time.
